The story of how Flo-Kelvin Freelance got its name

In the Beginning
Flo-Kelvin Freelance got  started because of an unusual project, powerful storms, and a long winding road. Not long ago, I was a hard working, productive  administrator for a successful school district. My job was interesting and challenging,  I really liked the people I worked with, and I was happy.

But there was this project my husband and I had been working on for years, many years, and  it was still far from finished. We dreamed of someday living in our solar efficient adobe home in the Arizona desert and enjoying the views from the patio in the evenings.
We had started construction on an adobe house expecting to hire helpers. But  we ended up doing all of the work ourselves instead of hiring a contractor to allow us more flexibility.

The Adobe House - under construction

As the project dragged on over several years, it seemed like the house would never be finished  at the rate we were going. So we made the decision to sell our house in town, bought an RV, and moved out to the property just as the spring wildflowers were in bursting into full bloom. Together we rolled up our sleeves, and committed to making the completion of the construction project a priority task.

For the first year I commuted to my job in town - a 70 mile drive - every weekday. The storms came during the summer. Arizona storms are called monsoons for a reason! The rain came down in torrents and dry washes began to flow. Long winding dirt roads were flooded, muddy, and  difficult to navigate  - especially in the dark. Every time it rained I wondered if I would get home safely or if the roads would be impassible.

By fall, the rains had ended and the roads were easier to navigate. But the commute did not get any better. The first 50 miles weren't bad, but it was usually dark when I got to the winding road, and there are no street lights or even houses along the way. It was like driving through a long dark tunnel for 20 miles.  By the time spring rolled around again, I started thinking that there must be a better way to make a living that spending three hours a day driving rough roads in all kinds of weather.  I decided that I had to find a new way to use my knowledge, experience and talents. That's when the idea of Flo-Kelvin was born.

The long winding road I told you about earlier is the Florence-Kelvin Highway (although highway is not a very fitting description of a dirt road), known as the Flo-Kelvin by the locals. I had a lot of time for thinking during the daily commute on that road, and made my decision to start a new career because of it.

I love to write and I am still passionate about education. I decided that starting a copywriting business would support teaching and learning in a different way.  So now I no longer commute every day, and I can work from our adobe house,  La Casa Terra,  in the beautiful Arizona desert. I enjoy spending peaceful afternoons writing creative copy, planning projects,  talking with clients, and learning new skills. Life is good!
